British Values

Introduction

At Robin Hood Multi Academy Trust, we are committed to providing a high-quality education that promotes the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance. We believe these values and the correct use of the terminology (once age appropriate) within this policy are essential for the personal development and well-being of our students, preparing them to be responsible citizens in a diverse society. Our British Values Policy is enhanced by our EPIC (Environment, Power, Innovation and Community) curriculum, which underpins our commitment to holistic education and prepares our students for their future roles as responsible citizens.

As a Trust, we expect our Schools to promote the following values through their daily activities, interactions and discussions.

Democracy:

We promote democracy by:

  • Providing opportunities for students to have their voices heard through the Student Council, peer mentoring programs, and regular surveys.
  • Encouraging open discussions and debates, fostering respect for different opinions and the understanding of democratic processes.
  • Developing a culture of inclusivity where everyone feels valued and has the right to contribute to decision-making processes.

Rule of Law:

We uphold the rule of law by:

  • Teaching students the importance of laws, both within the school and wider society.
  • Promoting respect for the rights and responsibilities of all individuals.
  • Demonstrating clear expectations for behaviour and consequences for non-compliance.
  • Inviting external agencies to educate students about legal matters, such as the police and legal professionals.

Individual Liberty:

We foster individual liberty by:

  • Encouraging students to express their opinions and beliefs in a respectful manner.
  • Providing a supportive and inclusive environment where students can explore their identities and develop their own values.
  • Promoting freedom of choice and ensuring that students understand the consequences of their actions.
  • Empowering students to take responsibility for their learning and personal development.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance:

We promote mutual respect and tolerance by:

  • Celebrating and valuing the diversity of our school community, including different cultures, religions, and lifestyles.
  • Teaching students about different faiths, beliefs, and cultural traditions, fostering understanding and appreciation.
  • Challenging prejudice, discrimination, and stereotypes through education and meaningful discussions.
  • Encouraging students to listen and show empathy towards others, promoting positive relationships.

Safeguarding:

Robin Hood Multi Academy Trust is committed to safeguarding and protecting our students from extremist influences or discriminatory behaviour that may challenge British values. We have robust safeguarding policies and procedures in place to identify and address any concerns promptly.

Implementation and Evaluation:

The British Values Policy will be implemented across all schools within the MAT. Each school will have a designated British Values Lead responsible for overseeing the policy's implementation, providing support to staff, and monitoring its effectiveness. Regular evaluations and feedback from students, staff, parents, and external agencies will inform ongoing improvements and updates.
